Size: 13”, 33cm

Large bill and head, blue gray on top with ragged crest and large gray breastband; females also have rusty breast band

habitat: streams, lakes; nests in banks

Camouflaged, brown above and white below, decurved bill an stiff tail for bracing, Ascends tree in spiral pattern from base

Solid gray above, bright yellow underneath, breast band of short black stripes

Bright orange crown in male & yellow in female bordered by black stripe.  Body olive gray with black & white barred wings

Finch – male deep blue all over, female brown

Darker gray on top and lighter gray below.  Big round black eyes rimmed white.  Black & white barred wings

Size: 6” 15cm

Orangey crown patch with side stripe, olive brown on top & blackish stripes on whitish breast below, pink legs

habitat: walks on ground a lot, in leafy deciduous woods, thickets

Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus)

Size: 10-14”, 25-35cm

Small, slender woodland hawk with slim tail and short rounded wings.  Dark gray back and rusty barred breast.  Looks similar to Coopers Hawk

Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus)

Size: 15-19 1/2”, 40-49cm

Bright red crest down between eyes to beak in male red patch at side of beak, patch between eyes black in female and no beak side red patch.  Black eye stripe and black & white stripe down neck, body black with white under wings (seen in flight)

habitat:  conifers, mixed conifer &hardwood forest, woodlots.  Large ovoid excavations indicate presence as well as loud drillling/tapping

White backs with checked black & white pattern on sides, white belly, large black eye band on white background, male has red patch on back of head.  Large strong bill

Fan shaped tail with broad black band on end, gray brown or red brown, small crest. Males make drumming sound
